Or is it “Writual in June”? Even though I’m an English teacher I sometimes don’t really know all the grammar rules or the any of the rules, really. (Don’t tell anyone.) I may not know my appositive from my causative, but I always know where to find information up on it. That’s a sly nod to one of my favorite quotes pictured above. That quote is in every semester’s lesson plan at some point and I share it in my adult learning classes, too. I can’t get over how relevant it is, with the Internet at our fingertips.
But I like the quote especially as it pertains to writing and, in particular, with my writers who “don’t know how to write.” I write about it all the time: You already know how to write, so really, just begin. Anything that comes up, you can look up later. Or ask someone a question (like me) or join an online writing group—or anything. The knowledge you already have is that you actually know how to write—pick up a pen and a journal, open a Word doc on your computer, use the Notes section of your phone or tablet—and write. You don’t need to know what it’s going to look like before you start. That’s what editors are for.
Just start.
June Workshops & Events
You can always check out my website for updates and classes, but here’s what’s happening in June:
And you can register here:
Also on June 20th at 6PM, I’ll be at the Woodbury Public Library doing a workshop on Discovering Your Writing Path. I’m excited to be back in person at the library and hope to see many of you there! To register now, click here: REGISTER or visit the library website here. https://woodburylibraryct.org/event-keeper/
The Woodbury Arts Alliance Arts Walk was canceled last month due to bad weather, but they’re held each month on the third Saturday of the month through September. This month’s Arts Walk is June 17th. I’m not sure if I’ll be doing a reading for that one, but I’ll probably be attending it! Come out and enjoy the (hopefully!) beautiful weather and the opportunity to get to know some of the local artists in the area.
And now . . . an announcement!
I am excited to share the pub date for my next book: August 6, 2024! Once again, I am publishing with She Writes Press and I am looking forward to working with them with this book. Tentatively titled: Caregiver Confidential: True Confessions of an Ambivalent Caregiver it is another collection of essays written during and after the time we cared for my dad in our home. I can’t share much more than that, but as details become confirmed (like preordering!) I’ll be sure to let you know. Watch this space!
Also, I am honored to be included in an anthology coming out on September 5th. Fast Fallen Women is being published by Woodhall Press and is edited by Gina Barreca. I have to admit, I can’t even believe that I’m included in this line-up, because look at it!—Jane Smiley, Amy Tan, Caroline Leavitt, Darien Hsu Gee, BobbieAnn Mason, Irene Beckerman, Lynn Peril, Honor Moore, BonnieJean Feldkamp, Angela Bonavoglia, Emily Toth, Melissa Llarena, Pia Bertucci, Amy Hartl-Sherman, Ebony Murphy Root to name a few!!
(be right back . . . I just fainted again . . .)
Everyday Grief - an update and last call
I set June 21st as the last day for submissions for the Everyday Grief anthology. If you’ve been thinking about it, please see the information on the website for submission details. We have over 50 writers so far, with the promise of others still working on their essays or poetry. I’ve submitted it to two publishers, and while I haven’t heard back yet from either one, I’m still committed to seeing this book in print. One of the reasons is because of the writers who have been so honest and open with their experiences. It convinces me more and more that a space for the voices of grief should be available in order for everyone to feel heard in their understanding of the process. Cindy’s Bookshop - a new section!
I’m not offering reviews—I can barely get through a book these days, much less review them. But I can recommend some and I’m starting this month with a book that’s coming out June 6th - Eat and Get Gas by Jodi Wright. This one I did read and here is an excerpt from my review:
“Along with a clam-bucket full of family secrets and set against the backdrop of the early 70s, Eat And Get Gas is the story of Evan, a thirteen year old girl who has adult responsibilities thrust upon her even as she feels as though she’s always being kept in the dark.
The early 70s is a character as well, embodying the strife of Viet Nam vets and deserters, the stigma of mental health issues and the fascination with at least one famous unsolved mystery.
Evan’s story is poignant and raw and honest. This is one of those books that, when you put it down, you find yourself weeks later wondering how the characters are doing. It will be hard to forget her.”
Cindy’s Bookshop site - buy recommended books here—or any books, really! Every purchase at Bookshop.org supports an independent bookstore.
