Way back when I was a kid growing up in Louisville, Kentucky summers felt like Mom opened the screen door in June, shooed us outside and called us back in after Labor Day.
I was so incredibly touched by your writing. I read your piece on Brevity and came to find more. Your life is so different from mine, and yet so similar. I'm a caregiver (to my husband, rather than my father). I live in the UK. My mum died in 2015. My sister in 2023. I wasn't a writer until my book was published in 2023. I'm in my 60s. I teach creative writing and write about nature, and history, and sometimes live through my characters. Wonderful to find your Substack.
It's wonderful to be found! How thoughtful of you to come visit and let me know. And yes, so many similarities--congratulations on your book! And please accept my condolences on your losses. I look forward to reading your work, too. xo
I absolutely love this. I can see, and feel, it all….. your childhood memories and your love for this oasis in Maine. Stay there as often and as long as you can. It’s good for the soul. Love you.
Oh, Annie’s tree. It’s beautiful. About those markers in life all showing up at once: I think nature insists upon serving up all courses of a feast at once (sad and/or joyous).
Annie's tree! Beautiful day and night. What a setting that is. One of my best friends' parents had a cottage in Maine for her growing up years and I got to visit once (she was my college roomie). They sold it as they got older, unfortunately, and my friend has been in grief over it ever since. I'm glad you have this place. It sounds amazing.
Wish I could come to the book launch but I'm booked (haha!). Have a wonderful time. Got my copies and I am really enjoying all of the different voices and stories.
Enjoy your hiding and seeking, Cindy. . .

My brother's family vacations at Migis... my nephew married there... Sebago is magical.. Immerse and enjoy...
Migis is right down the road--or the lake as the case may be. Let me know if you're ever there with him!
Love.
